LaTeX's margins are, by default, 1. This is the standard for book margins. If you want to change them, you have several options: the "geometry" package, the "fullpage" package or changing the margins by hand. The geometry package is very powerful, but can also be complicated to use. By far the easiest way to use it is to specify the margin as an option to the package:.

One of the greatest motivating forces for Donald Knuth when he began developing the original TeX system was to create something that allowed simple construction of mathematical formulae, while looking professional when printed. The fact that he succeeded was most probably why TeX and later on, LaTeX became so popular within the scientific community. Typesetting mathematics is one of LaTeX's greatest strengths. It is also a large topic due to the existence of so much mathematical notation. If your document requires only a few simple mathematical formulas, plain LaTeX has most of the tools that you will need.
Using LaTeX packages
The page dimensions in a L a T e X document are highly configurable and the geometry package offers a simple way to change the length and layout of different elements such as the paper size, margins, footnote, header, orientation, etc. Suppose you have to create a document in a4paper and the text shouldn't exceed 6 in width and 8 in height.
